You are not waiting blind.

What a garage door spring actually does

The motor does not lift your garage door. The springs do. The motor is only there to guide it and hold it in place.

A torsion spring, mounted on a bar above the door, is wound under enormous tension. As the door comes down, the spring winds up and stores that energy. As the door goes up, it releases it, and that release is what carries the weight. A properly balanced door can be lifted with one hand.

That is also why a spring is the most dangerous part on the door. It is a coiled steel bar holding hundreds of kilos of stored energy. If it lets go while someone is working on it without the right winding bars, it will break bones and worse. This is the one part of the door where "have a go yourself" is a genuinely bad idea, and any tradesman who tells you otherwise should not be in your garage.

Common faults we are called out to across Perth

Garage door spring replacement across Perth

We replace torsion and extension springs on sectional, tilt and roller doors across Perth.

We measure the door and the existing spring, because a spring has to be matched to the weight and the travel of the door it is lifting. The wrong spring makes the door too heavy or too light, and either one wears out the motor and the cables.

We will also usually recommend replacing both springs at once if the door has two. Springs on the same door have done the same number of cycles. When one goes, the other is generally not far behind, and paying the callout twice costs more than the second spring does.

Once the spring is in, the door gets balanced. It should stay put wherever you leave it, halfway up, without drifting. Then the motor's force and travel settings get reset to suit the newly balanced door, and the auto-reverse gets tested.

Signs your garage door spring is broken or failing

These are the symptoms. If you have the first two, ring us now.

  • You heard a loud bang or crack from the garage. It is usually described as a gunshot. That is the spring letting go.

  • The door will not lift, or is extremely heavy to lift by hand with the motor disengaged.

  • You can see a visible gap in the coil of the spring above the door. A broken torsion spring has an obvious separation in it.

  • The motor strains, hums, or lifts the door a few centimetres and stops.

  • The door slams shut of rarather than coming down under control.

  • The door lifts crooked, one side higher than the other. Often one spring of two has failed.

  • The door will not stay open and drifts back down on its own.

  • The cables have gone slack or come off the drum, which often happens the moment the spring lets go.

  • The spring looks rusty, stretched, or has visible gaps between the coils along its length.

  • The door shudders violently at the start of the lift.

Do not try to wind, adjust or remove a torsion spring yourself. Do not keep pressing the remote to force the motor through it. Do not park under a door with a broken spring.

Questions

Garage door spring repair in Perth: common questions

How do I know if my garage door spring is broken?

The clearest sign is a loud bang followed by a door that will not lift. Look at the spring on the bar above the door. A broken torsion spring has a visible gap where the coil has separated. The door will also feel enormously heavy by hand, because the spring is no longer carrying its weight.

Can I replace a garage door spring myself?

No. A torsion spring holds hundreds of kilos of stored energy under tension and requires proper winding bars and technique to release safely. Getting it wrong causes serious injuries every year. This is the one component on a garage door that should always be left to someone who does it for a living.

How much does garage door spring replacement cost in Perth?

Every door is a bit different, so the price depends on the size and weight of the door and which springs it takes. We quote the job rather than posting a list price. Ring 0455 515 428 and describe the door, and for the common faults we can usually give you a figure, or a tight range, on the phone. You hear the price before any work starts.

Should I replace both springs or just the broken one?

Power surges commonly damage the circuit board or wipe the motor's stored travel limits. Sometimes it is as simple as reprogramming the limits and recoding the remote. Sometimes the board is gone. We will test it and tell you which, rather than guessing.

How long do garage door springs last?

Most springs are rated for around 10,000 cycles, which is roughly 7 to 10 years for a normal household opening the door a few times a day. A family using the door six or eight times daily will get there faster. Coastal Perth homes wear springs out sooner because salt air corrodes the steel.

Can I still use my garage door with a broken spring?

No. Keep pressing the remote and you will strip the motor's drive gear or burn it out, turning one repair into two. Lifting it by hand is worse, because the door can drop without warning. Leave it where it is and ring 0455 515 428.

Broken spring? Do not touch it. Ring us.

We will tell you when we are coming, and we will get the door lifting properly again.
